UPI autopay mandate failed — how to fix it

UPI autopay mandate failed? Here's exactly what to do: recheck your bank balance, re-trigger the mandate, and confirm with your SIP or insurer within 24 ho

You set up a UPI autopay for your SIP or insurance premium, forgot about it, and then got a notification that the payment failed. Now you’re wondering whether your policy lapsed, whether your SIP missed a unit purchase at a good NAV, and — more urgently — what you’re supposed to actually do about it.

Here’s the short answer: a failed UPI autopay mandate is almost always fixable in under 10 minutes, and the damage is usually less serious than it feels. But you do need to act quickly.

Why UPI Autopay Mandates Fail in the First Place

The most common reason is a bank account balance issue. UPI autopay mandates work by pulling money directly from your linked bank account on a scheduled date. If your salary hits on the 1st and your SIP deduction is set for the 31st — and there’s a ₹4,000 shortfall that day — the mandate fails. Simple as that.

The second reason is a technical glitch at either your bank or the payment platform. NPCI (the body that runs UPI in India) occasionally has settlement issues, and some banks — particularly smaller ones — have historically struggled with mandate execution. If you’re using a UPI ID linked to a bank like Punjab National Bank or Indian Bank instead of HDFC or ICICI, you may see this more often.

The third reason is that your mandate itself expired or was never fully authenticated. When you set up a UPI autopay — say, on Groww for a ₹3,000 monthly SIP — the platform sends a one-time authentication request to your UPI app. If you didn’t complete that step, or if the authentication window expired, the mandate was never active to begin with.

What Actually Happens When a Mandate Fails

For mutual fund SIPs, a failed mandate means you simply miss that month’s instalment. The SIP doesn’t get cancelled automatically, and your existing units stay untouched. Groww, Zerodha Coin, and Kuvera all send you a notification, and the next scheduled SIP will attempt as normal. You can also manually place a lumpsum investment for that missed amount if you want to stay on track.

For insurance premiums, the stakes are higher. Most insurers give a grace period of 15 to 30 days after a missed payment before the policy lapses. So if your ₹1,200/month term plan premium failed on the 5th, you typically have until the 20th–5th of next month to make good on it without losing coverage. But don’t assume — check your policy document or log into your insurer’s portal to confirm the exact grace period.

For loan EMIs, a failed autopay can trigger a late payment fee (usually ₹200–₹500) and, if it goes unreported and unpaid, a mark on your CIBIL report. One missed EMI won’t destroy your score, but if your score drops from 780 to 750 because of an avoidable glitch, that matters when you apply for a home loan next year.

How to Actually Fix It — Step by Step

Step 1: Check why it failed. Open your UPI app (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm, or your bank’s app) and go to the mandates section. On PhonePe, it’s under Profile → UPI Mandates. On GPay, it’s under Manage Payment Methods → UPI Mandates. You’ll see whether the mandate is active, expired, or pending authentication.

Step 2: Revoke and re-create the mandate if it’s showing as failed or inactive. Go back to the originating platform — say, Kuvera for your SIP — and initiate the mandate setup again. Complete the UPI authentication this time all the way through, including approving the ₹1 verification debit if prompted.

Step 3: Make the missed payment manually. Don’t wait for the next autopay cycle. If you missed a ₹5,000 SIP in your HDFC Flexi Cap fund on the 10th, log in and place a manual lumpsum of ₹5,000 now. It won’t perfectly replicate rupee-cost averaging — that’s the strategy of buying more units when prices are low and fewer when prices are high — but it ensures continuity.

Step 4: Fix the root cause. If the failure was due to low balance, set a calendar reminder two days before your autopay date to ensure funds are available. If it was a bank-side issue, consider switching your UPI mandate to a more reliable bank account. HDFC and ICICI have the most consistent mandate execution track records.

The whole process, start to finish, takes about 10 minutes on a phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a failed UPI autopay affect my CIBIL score?

A single failed autopay for a mutual fund SIP or insurance premium won’t directly affect your CIBIL score. However, a failed EMI that goes unpaid beyond 30 days will be reported to credit bureaus by your lender, which can drop your score.

Does my SIP get cancelled if the autopay fails once?

No. Most mutual fund platforms — Groww, Zerodha Coin, Kuvera — keep your SIP active even after a failed mandate. The next instalment attempt happens on the next scheduled date. You just miss that one month’s purchase.

How do I check my active UPI mandates?

Open your UPI app. On PhonePe, go to Profile → UPI Mandates. On Google Pay, go to your profile icon → Manage Payment Methods → UPI Mandates. You’ll see all active and expired mandates listed there.

Can I set up a UPI autopay mandate for a different bank account than my main UPI ID?

Yes. During the mandate setup on any platform, you can select which UPI-linked bank account to debit. If your salary account at SBI has autopay issues, you can route the mandate through your HDFC savings account instead — as long as that account has a valid UPI ID linked.

What’s the maximum amount a UPI autopay mandate can debit?

NPCI currently allows UPI autopay mandates up to ₹1 lakh per transaction without requiring additional authentication at the time of debit. Mandates above ₹1 lakh require a one-time password or PIN confirmation each time the debit occurs.
